The government shutdown pushed up U.S. unemployment rate in January.

“U.S. hiring in January topped all forecasts while wage gains cooled and the government shutdown pushed up the unemployment rate, signaling job gains remain robust without major inflation pressures that would worry Federal Reserve officials.” READ MORE

 

A report from Brookings Institution finds that 36 million Americans are vulnerable to having their jobs eliminated by automation.

Another case for why reskilling will be so important. “The report, published Thursday, says roughly 36 million Americans hold jobs with ‘high exposure’ to automation — meaning at least 70 percent of their tasks could soon be performed by machines using current technology. Among those most likely to be affected are cooks, waiters and others in food services; short-haul truck drivers; and clerical office workers.” READ MORE

 

The UK employment rate is at its highest level since 1971, and this is great news for underrepresented talent pools.

Including ethnic minorities and people with disabilities. “Many typically disadvantaged groups have seen a huge jump in their employment levels, which hopefully suggests a positive trend in employer attitudes. Ethnic minorities account for almost half of the increase, with the most prominent subgroup being ethnic minority people who are high-qualified, non-disabled, and not single parents (comprising 21% of overall employment growth). Both of these facts suggest that the labour market is currently very tight – causing firms to look at disadvantaged groups and seeing their potential with fresh eyes.” READ MORE
